Video/ Animation

I work with video and animation.

Video work in recent years includes camera/ editing work for a documentary on Indigenous culture in the Bendigo region, working in a studio-based camera team on an educational lecture series for Open Universities and directing interviews, 'mini-docs' with 40+ creative practitioners about the significance of location in their work for the ACMI online project 15 second place. Also working with video in a workshop context, for instance for this film with the kids at the Venny.

I have directed a number of award-winning animated short films which have screened internationally at festivals including the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the New York Expo and the KROK Film Festival, Russia - and on the Comedy Channel, ABC and SBS TV. I am also proud to have been part of the Southern Ladies Animation Group, an animation collective who creates the multiple award winning, AFI nominated, Sundance screened It's Like ThatMy current animation practice is often based around creative collaboration or workshop development with artists, communities and schools.

Here's a selection of past work:

Installation view and process video of my collaboration with Maryann Talia Pau and Dell Stewart for 'Stitching Time' at Craft Victoria

An excerpt from 'Murmur,' my student film, which screened extensively at international festivals. A man experiences a very different kind of heart trouble.

A clip from 'Fish Dinner,' a finalist in the Brisbane International Film Festival's 'fast film' competition, made with Dell Stewart. Films in this competition were created super fast, with the theme 'fish.' In this story a woman hosts a dinner party, unaware of the drama unfolding in her fish bowl.

Dance move animation from my project with kids at Yirrkala School, Northeast Arnhem Land. This photo-collage stop motion style is one I have been playing with quite a bit lately.

Dance moves from Kate Matthews on Vimeo.

A clip from 'The Game Board,' an animated adaptation of an Ethiopian Fairytale commissioned for SBS 'World Tales' project, also created in Amharic language.

'Fruit Salad' - an animated countdown leader (no sound) I made with Dell Stewart for Craft Victoria's 'Craft Cubed' festival.

Here's a quick test shot (no sound) for 'A Long Walk,' an un-produced animated film, for which I was preselected, along with 14 other directors from the world with projects in development, for the Berlin International Film Festival's 'Berlin Today Award.' The story features a skeleton taking a journey into the city.

Some clips from ACMI's '15 second place' project - interviews with the owner and staff at the Dandenong Lunar Drive In.
